Founded in January 2026 by Rob Miles, The People’s Archive Plymouth exists to preserve the city’s historical record through structured research, community contribution and long-term digital preservation.
The archive ensures that photographs, documents, stories and local knowledge are not lost to time and remain freely accessible for future generations.
Every item is reviewed, researched and maintained by volunteers operating within structured archival workflows designed to maintain a high standard of historical organisation and accuracy.
Anyone may freely use the archive for personal, educational and research purposes. Commercial and for-profit organisations may also use archive material where permitted — full licensing details are clearly displayed within the archive platform.
The project is overseen by a board of members.
Together they bring significant local knowledge, strong digital reach and proven organisational experience.
The archive is proudly sponsored and funded by The Plymouth Barbican Trust — a long-established and highly respected local charity with deep links across Plymouth.
Support also comes from Facebook groups Plymouth History, Cyberheritage, Plymouth Street Scenes, and the Old Plymouth Society.
The archive will continue expanding through its dedicated digital platform, ensuring Plymouth’s history remains preserved and freely available for generations to come.
The People's Archive runs a rolling programme of volunteer recruitment to help build and manage the archive. Always looking for people with a willingness to help out and a desire to be part of something special and unique, why not find out about our Volunteer Roles by using the links at the top of the page?
